For students high school can be hell, but it can be worse for the teachers. Chalk follows the frenetic and awkwardly painful journey of three novice teachers as they navigate one memorable public school year. As a former teacher, Akel is able to offer a unique, firsthand view of life as an educator, and along with the cast, he dives headfirst into the absurd and often volatile world of public education. In a country where 50% of teachers quit within the first three years, Chalk delivers an enormous dose of heart, hilarity, and hope for America’s most important institution. |

One of the funniest films I've seen all year, big or small. A mockumentary in the spirit of "The Office," this film clearly has its own voice. Original, quirky, and absolutely hilarious. The IMAX audience last night was nearly in tears. A brilliant screenplay paired with an ensemble cast that to a last one is dead on. There is not a single flat performance, and in fact, I have a hard time singling out any one performer. I haven't seen an "unknown" narrative at a festival that was this good in as long as I can remember. Definitely has strong potential beyond the festival circuit. Go see it. Really.
