The Kentucky Derby is known as 'the most exciting two minutes in sports”. Just to get a horse to the gate in the world’s most prestigious race defies the odds. The Hennegan Brother’s involving and unexpectedly moving film follows the lives of the teams of people, and their extended families, that train horses for glory. Focusing on the lead up to the 2006 Derby, complex portraits are drawn of six organizations that range from the sure things to the scrappy underdogs, and you are taken into the driven world of professional horse racing.

Whether or not you know or care anything about the Kentucky Derby, you can enjoy this documentary. It's really a story about the people and their families who love and train race horses like those eligible to compete in the Derby. There are wonderful scenes of spirited, beautiful horses - but what you will love are the people you come to know. This documentary is filled with good music, lots of humor, a little pathos, and an interesting mix of trainers and stables from different parts of the country. I've often watched the Derby but never thought about what makes a horse eligible to be among the 20 competitors in this famous race. Even someone not interested in horses or racing can enjoy this ride.
