Johnny Tesar, Johnny Rock, “the last Indian on the Trail of Tears”—the subject of Brett Hanover’s fascinating portrait has as many different names as he does facets. Living in the backwoods of Tennessee, Johnny is an entrepreneur, amateur archeologist, animal lover, and raconteur. He’s built houses, run miniature golf courses populated by rabbits, and claims to have discovered ancient civilizations by looking at “relics” he finds lying on the ground. But to hear the stories from his friends and his enemies, it is difficult to discern the real Johnny from the legend. Intimate and funny, without ever condescending to its subjects, Hanover’s film is a mesmerizing look into life as the story you tell.
