Comedy Vanguard
The story of a small-town mine-worker named Power who’s obsessed with drums. Only problem is, he’s never played them—so he has become an expert “air-drummer,” a skill which so far has not earned him respect from his union-leader father, or from the working-class town he was raised in. He soon discovers an underground network of people who play “air drums” competitively, and his life and destiny change forever.
Comedy Vanguard
With its debut feature film, the filmmaking collective know as “Sweaty Robot” has created a completely original comedy about best friends and the value of lifelong loyalty. Harris wears fake facial hair, but no one in his small, protective neighborhood has the heart to tell him it looks ridiculous. His best friend and younger brother have spent their entire lives protecting him from the impending embarrassment. But on Harris’s 25th birthday, his best friend’s girlfriend shows up and points out the obvious, creating fallout from Harris that they have to deal with while trying to get on with their own adult lives. The guys in Sweaty Robot have a unique sense of comic timing that could come only from knowing and working with each other for years.
Comedy Vanguard
Trapped in Utah with an overbearing mother and an older brother bent on sabotaging his entire life, teenage Ethan channels all his ambitions into a deluded obsession with uber-hottie Madison Sweet. Meanwhile, his cousin Cleo seems to want to be closer than just family. A true labor of love for writer/director/producer/editor/star Packard, this hilarious and sweet tale of a boy trying to find his way in the world is a far more than a coming of age story but is right in step with classics like Better Off Dead.
Comedy Vanguard
Debbie has a bit of a problem: last year her boyfriend went crazy and she had to kill him with an axe. Now she’s sixteen, a misfit at school, harassed by her mother, and monitored by creepy psychologists. What’s a girl to do? How about a sleepover with some new supposed friends? And how about that escaped hoard of raving psychopaths—can they come over too? Deyoe and Gosselin return to the festival after last year’s Street Team Massacre with another outing of their unique blend of gross-out horror and comedy.

Comedy Vanguard
The death of their father is the jumping-off point for this original comedy about three brothers looking to reconnect. Against his wishes, their father is buried in Texas. The older two siblings decide to take matters into their own hands, starting by kidnapping their baby brother and digging up their father’s coffin to return it to Oklahoma. The first feature by the AFF alum Singletree crew from Norman, Oklahoma (AFF ’06 Special Jury Award, For the Love of Family) is a fantastic blend of humor and honesty that knows a lot about being a brother and a son.
Comedy Vanguard
George Washington Winsterhammerman lives a comfortable life. He has a wife, a child, a house, and a boat. Every day George goes to work as a level-three Visioneer with the Jeffers Corp, the largest corporation in the history of mankind. When people around him begin to spontaneously explode, George tries to ignore them, like the rest of the population. But as the explosion epidemic increases, George is told by his doctor that the dreams he's having are a symptom of impending explosion and is advised to stop having them. Unfortunately, he can't, and George is forced to face the truth in order to save himself. The Drake brother’s film is a perfect balance of pathos and comedy, and Galifianakis’s performance has an incredible human depth.
Comedy Vanguard
The story of two wannabe hipsters who are sick and tired of trying to make a name for themselves the old-fashioned way. Terrance is trying to make it as a rock star, while Theo dreams of getting his first book published: “Truck Stop Hustler,” a racy look at life on the streets as a junkie prostitute. After a string of humiliations by both publishers and music critics, the two hatch a plan to turn Theo’s fictional book into an autobiography by having Terrance dress up as the story’s protagonist, KK Downey, and claim all the events as having happened to him. The first feature by five-time AFF alumni Kidnapper Films, an acclaimed Montreal-based comedy group.
