My Name is Smith is a quirky documentary that proves the name “Smith” is anything but generic. Filmmaker and AFF alum James Allen Smith documents his return “home” for a year to discover, “Everybody gets to a point in their lives where their parents stop being their parents and start being real people.” His parents are blunt and straightforward. They do not shirk from showing their household clutter, misunderstandings, and peculiar habits. Smith documents his parents’ enchanting memories as they adjust to aging and illness. Every family has a story; this one may show you that “normal” is an abstract idea.

I loved this doc - probably my favorite at the festival this year. The characters are quirky and endearing, even the filmmaker himself. I was expecting a spectacle, and indeed there were moments, but it turned out to be a love story. Real love, the kind that endures over decades. Sounds corny, but it was inspirational. Makes me want to document my own family in some way. Not necessarily to make a movie, but to capture as much of my parents as I can while they are still on the earth.
